Cattail Fight
January 25, 1998

All of Boulder City was busy preparing for Super Bowl Sunday when a group of enterprising joyseekers abandoned such mundane activity in pursuit of a higher form of entertainment. South of the Sewage Treatment ponds, where a damp trail snakes it's swampy way through the desert, cattails grow to magnificent heights. This sunny day found them in full, ripe glory, ready to burst.

The culprits. A band of wild children foraging through the desert. Their message: Many parts of the desert plants are edible. (Don't believe everything a four-year-old tells you!)

With the help of several taller accomplices, the cattails were harvested. Carefully. Black may not have been the wisest clothing color choice for an afternoon such as this.

The fight begins! Using the cattails as swords, the children smacked them together accompanied by appropriate sound effects: spit, gag, sneeze.
January in Nevada is not usually white, but on this afternoon it was. The bushes glistened with fluffy seeds and there was pleasure in walking through the strange ground fog.
