A Perseid Meteor Shower … Comin’ Up!

Perseid Meteor ShowerNow THIS might be something fun to do with the kids (of all ages, of course) next week before school starts back up … stay up all night with the folks from Lake Mead Institute to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower!

The folks from NASA say this will be a fantastic meteor shower to watch because the Perseids feature fast and bright meteors that frequently leave trails and there will be no moonlight to upstage the shower (as many as 80 per hour at peak times).  To read more about the shower itself, you can CLICK HERE for a good article on USA Today’s website.

Now — where to watch?  Anywhere you like, of course – even in your own Boulder City backyard!  Of course – the darker the area, the better the view though, so if anyone is planning a viewing party in or near Boulder City and wants to share it on the Facebook page — please feel free, of course!

BUT … if you don’t mind traveling a bit and would like to view the show with the Lake Mead Institute and rangers, they will be hosting a meteor-watching event at Nevada Telephone Cove starting on Wednesday, August 12th.  It begins 9pm and runs all night into the 13th (as the peak viewing time will be between 1am – 4am).   Naturally, they ask that you please bring a chair and water … and if you’d like more information, please call them at 702-293-8990.

So where’s Nevada Telephone Cove?  Kinda far (and definitely outside Boulder City), but it’s generally near the Laughlin area, so you’ll want to take the 95 South past Searchlight and make a left onto 163 headed toward Bullhead City & Laughlin.  Just after Christmas Tree Pass, you’ll make a left on a dirt road (that comes up kind of quickly).  Again … it’s a dirt road and so you’ll want to be in a vehicle that can handle itself in a slightly bumpy off-road situation.

You can CLICK HERE for a Google Map to get you to Nevada Telephone Cove Rd and Lake Mead Institute said they’d have signs out for you to follow once it’s time to turn off of the 163.
