A Tour of St. Thomas This Month at Lake Mead

February 1, 2018 by Jean Widner

There’s a lot of great stuff happening at Lake Mead this February 2018, but one of the high lights for certain is the coming guided Ranger Hike through the abandoned town of St. Thomas on February 10th, at 9:00am. Details are here for you:

Join a ranger and volunteers on Feb. 10 and walk back in time to the days before the waters of Lake Mead covered the small farming community of St. Thomas. Explore the remnants of life in earlier times and learn about the lifestyles of times gone by. For more information and to register, call 702-293-8990.

Here’s a super neat little 6-minute video with all you ever wanted to know about St. Thomas, Nevada — the town that was flooded 60 feet under water when Lake Mead began filling in 1935.

The video shows the town when it did exist (through photos), an artist’s video animation of what the flooding would have looked like and what the town looks like today, now that Lake Mead’s low levels have exposed the town again (since 2002). Enjoy!

Other Events at Lake Mead this month include:

Ranger Chat: Public Lands-Treasures of Southern Nevada, Feb 3

Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Feb. 3 to learn about the variety of public lands that surround the Las Vegas Valley. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Ranger Hike: Lakeview Trail, Feb 16

Join a ranger at Katherine Landing at 9 a.m. Feb. 16 for a guided hike on the Lakeview Trail. This moderately strenuous, 2.5 mile-hike provides opportunities to take in mountainous landscape with views of the harbor, Lake Mohave and Telephone Cove. For more information and to make a reservation, call 702-293-8970.

Saints and Sinners Half Marathon, Feb 17

Over 700 athletes will be participating in the Saints and Sinners Half Marathon Feb. 17. The race includes a half marathon, relay and fun run along Historic Railroad Trail and Boulder Beach. For more information on this permitted event, visit saintsandsinnershalf.com.

Volunteer Program: Sahara Mustard Pull Feb 24

Volunteers are needed to help preserve rare and endangered plant species at Lake Mead. Volunteers will remove invasive plants that threaten native species from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 24. Join a ranger to learn about Sahara Mustard and how it impacts plant ecosystems. Volunteers will travel by boat to a selected cove to help remove this noxious plant. Volunteers must be able to bend, stoop and kneel while pulling Sahara Mustard. Space is limited to 12 people. For more information and to register call 702- 293-8711 or email rhiannon_rowlands@nps.gov.

Ranger Program: Chasing the Stars, Feb 24

Join rangers and the Astronomical Society at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater to learn about the night sky and to discuss the impacts of light pollution on national parks. Telescope viewing will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tips will be shared about how to protect and view the night sky. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
