Local School Principal Recognized as Principal of the Year

Ms Hood Teacher Of Year Boulder City, NV

Principal Jamey Hood at Garrett Middle School here in Boulder City, as been awarded Principal of the Year for the state of Nevada! The award comes from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and qualifies her to be entered into the national Principal of the Year recognition platform.

When we asked Ms. Hood what meant the most to her about this honor, she said that she was very humbled by the award, and added, “it’s great because of the community recognition – we have the best parents, teachers and staff here. If there is anything that I’m good at, it would be hiring great people, supporting them, and then I just get out of their way.”

Ms. Hood says she’ll be attending the NASSP national conference in Chicago in July, and this is where the national winner will be announced. She said that when she was initially nominated for the award,  she was not going to enter. (Aren’t we glad she changed her mind!) Candidates are anonymously nominated, but then a written recommendation in support needs to come from a group of others: parents, teachers, students and administrators all give their opinions – and she says she has no idea what they wrote! It is from those recommendations that the winner of the award is chosen.

As a fun sidebar – Boulder City is in good company here. The 2017 winner of Principal of the Year was Jillyn Pendleton, who is a Boulder City native and won for her work at Ed W. Clark High School.

Best of luck to Principal Hood and thanks for all you do for our community, and your students and staff!
