New K-9 Kevlar Vests For Boulder City Officers

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, meet Officer Alan Nutzman and his partner Luna, one of two of Boulder City’s K-9 units! A few weeks ago they received bulletproof kevlar vests for both of the K-9 officers in town, (Officer Armando Salazar and Lloyd are not pictured).

This was brought about by the generous donations from Boulder City residents who in record time, answered the call for the $5,200 in funds needed to get both of these dogs the added protection they need while on calls. In talking to Officer Nutzman when I interviewed him, it’s a sad truth that in their work sometimes people in the heat of a situation may try to harm the dogs, and this protection is necessary to keep them safer. He tells us, the dogs are often first through the door, and the vests are stab resistant, bulletproof and shock absorbent.

The vests came from a non-profit located up in Washington State, that allowed them to be purchased at a reduced price. The funds were raised in just two days once the City asked for the assistance from the community! Then the vest maker sends out a kit and they measure both dogs for their custom made vests, which they then received in late May.

Even more special is that all of the vests purchased via this non-profit include a dedication – the one pictured up above is on the inside of Luna’s vest, and the one for Lloyd honors Dan Leach, we’re told. This one above from Nye County is special Nutzman tells us because a lot of Boulder City’s police members come down from Nye in the course of their career, so they feel a connection to that area.

Officer Nutazman says Luna, like all K-9’s we’re aware of, live with him full time and they share a deep bond. He and his family own two other dogs which he says all get along just fine, but Luna gets to go to work with him while the others stay home.

The Boulder City Police Department and of course all of their officers, but especially Nutzman and Salazar are very grateful to Boulder City for the exceptional support. May you all continue to stay safe, and thank you for all you do to protect us!
