We met up with local Owner and Restaurateur, Grant Turner who also owns The Dillinger, The Tap and the Forge Social House, at his newest project which will be a concept bar located at the former Back in Thyme location at 524 Nevada Way. From the beginning, he has told us this is a pure passion project, and he has long wanted to open a tavern with a ‘sliver bar’ concept, as in a long, narrow bar environment where a classic old-school long bar is the star of the show.
As it happened in late 2020, Glena Dunn, the owner of the Back in Thyme Antique Store who owned this location decided to make a move over to her new spot on California Avenue. Grant heard about the opportunity to own the building and jumped at the chance.
Since that time, the front windows have remained screened off, and we think you can see why. Grant says they are taking their time with this project, intending to build it absolutely with everything they want, and where they want it, from the plumbing, electrical and all the details right from the ground up. They have also run into some surprises that have definitely had them moving slower than initially planned.
Most of you may remember, from the older antique store, you changed elevation rather quickly, only about 12-15′ into the store, walking up a set of stairs to a higher level. Knowing they needed a longer level space to work with, when they tore away that construction, they discovered that the original walls we’re literally just ‘floating’ above that older rising structure and hadn’t been poured all the way to the bottom base of the building itself. Ooops….so that has required the crew to spend a great deal of time first digging that all away, and then shoring up and pouring the base of those walls into place. Grant tells us that is all done now, and we give you a virtual tour above, showing those sections as well.
Now that this work is done, they will begin layering in all of the utility infrastructure and then eventually get to make the place pretty for us! Grant was unwilling as of right now to share what those mock-ups look like, holding them close to the vest for now. But as usual you know you can count on us to keep you posted as they make progress and get closer to opening. Good luck Grant, thanks for all you do for our downtown, and we wish you speedy progress and continued success!
