“Bee” Prepared: It’s Pollinator Week

Pollinator Week was designated by Congress more than fourteen years ago to celebrate pollinators and identify ways they can be protected. Pollinator populations have been declining over the years, which makes this an important event to support the environment that produces our local pollinators: bees, birds, butterflies, bats, beetles, moths, wasps, and flies. This year, Pollinator Week will be celebrated June 20-26, 2022.

Local gardeners, in conjunction with the City of Boulder City, will observe the following events for Pollinator Week:

Monday, June 20: Official proclamations by the State of Nevada and City of Boulder City will be posted in the lobby of the Boulder Dam Hotel. This will be the official kickoff of events for Pollinator Week. There will be a toolkit and calendar of activities handouts available at the Boulder Dam Hotel lobby (1302 Arizona Street) and Iron Rose Plant Shop (525 Nevada Way). You can sign up to receive your Official Pollinator Stop Sign at either location. You can also gather materials, supplies, and participate in giveaways to support Pollinator Week. These give you a chance to make Pollinator Week projects and activities.

Tuesday, June 21: Meet the Pollinators! Visit Iron Rose Plant Shop or the Boulder Dam Hotel to learn about local pollinators. You can learn how to grow foods and plants conducive to encouraging pollinators to visit.

Wednesday, June 22: Meet the 2022 theme bearers of Pollinator Week: moths and butterflies! Materials will be available at Boulder Dam Hotel and Iron Rose Plant Shop.

Thursday, June 23: Meet hummingbirds and learn more about how they live. You can find out how to support these amazing birds who help pollinate local plants.

According to local Master Gardener, Cheryl Waites:

For Pollinator Week, we’ll be creating “The Pollinator Path of Boulder City”. Each resident can participate by featuring their yard or garden with plants, blowers, or trees that support pollinators and in turn receive a really cool “Pollinator Stop” sign and a spot on our “Pollinator Path” map.

We’ll be kicking off the project by announcement of the proclamation by our mayor with the lighting of the bistro lights over Arizona Street. Then during our Pollinator Week, the community can cruise throughout town, seeing the beauty and hard work of our pollinators at homes, gardens, parks, and landscapes.

Each day brings new daily activities such as scavenger hunts, evening lighting of pollinator support lights, seed exchanges, garden parties, make and take crafts, all with special focus on particular pollinators of the day with fun facts and more!

In the evenings during this week, you can enjoy the Pollinator Week themed colored lights (orange and yellow). Residents and businesses are encouraged to do the same.
