This week, they invited Amanda Kehrer, Volunteer Coordinator for the Southern Nevada Veterans Home to speak to the assembled members. They also provided a $100 check for haircuts for residents and many toiletry items collected over the last few weeks.
There are currently about 150 patients at the Veterans home. Unlike most retirement homes, the population is overwhelmingly male, with only about 30 women currently residing there. What most of us are maybe not aware of is that there is a need to help these folks make their lives a little more comfortable and some are on very tight personal income levels. Donations of specific items for residents, cash contributions, and volunteer services are some of the ways Boulder City can support the residents and programs at the home.
It was learned that many of the residents of the Veterans Home have very strict budgets and cannot afford to purchase their own personal care items. This means they use the generic items that are provided by the State of Nevada instead. Boulder Business Development members supplied body wash, deodorant, lotion, hair care products, dental products, and other brand name items for the residents there. These items are highly coveted and donations of such items as those listed above, as well as electric razors, new clothing and shoes (no used items please) are welcomed. Community members can also make financial donations directly to Nevada Veterans Assistance League, (HERE) which directly supports the residents and activities at the Southern Nevada Veterans Home.
The home is also looking for a number of volunteers to assist with tasks at the veterans home. Some of the volunteer opportunities available include bingo assistants, canteen volunteers, activities assistants and the like. The residents of the home go on several outings per month when there are volunteers along to assist.
To find out how you can be a part of the volunteers at the home, you may contact Amanda Kehrer, Volunteer Coordinator via email (HERE) or by telephone at (702) 332-6741.
