We recently spent some time with Brendan Hanson, Animal Control Supervisor at the Animal Shelter and touched on several subjects related to pets and animal control.
Responsible Pet Ownership
First of all, this being the holiday season, it’s important to remind gift givers that animals are NOT presents. The commitment to being a pet owner is not a simple one and too often, animals given as pets end up in the shelter when the animal is no longer desired. Don’t subject animals to this trauma and stick with other, more appropriate gifts this holiday season.
Items Needed at the Shelter (ongoing)
Speaking of gifts, the Animal Shelter is always in need of donations from residents. These are some of the items most requested by the shelter staff:
- Purina dog or cat dry food
- Fancy Feast wet kitten food
- Friskies wet cat food
- Milk Bone treats for dogs
- Old towels, blankets, and rags for use around the shelter
- Chlorine bleach
- Laundry detergent
- Household cleaners
- Dishwashing soap
- Dog and cat toys
City Leash Law
We also discussed the new City leash law. The law requires dogs to be leashed when in public unless they are in a City Council designated off leash area (see Ordinance 1872 HERE). The designated off leash areas are as follows:
- Fenced in dog parks at Veterans Memorial Park from 5:00AM to 10:00PM. This includes both the City’s dog park and the See Spot Run location at the Veterans Memorial Park.
- North Escalante park from 5:00AM to 10:00PM
- Linear Channel between Ville Drive and Lake Mountain Drive from 5:00AM to 10:00PM
- Wilbur Square aka “Government Park” has LIMITED OFF LEASH HOURS from 5:00AM to 8:00AM and 3:00PM to 6:00PM
- Outlying Boulder City desert areas, with the exception of the Dry Lake Bed in Eldorado Valley
- Dogs are also prohibited in Hemenway Park at all times
All dogs must be leashed upon entering and exiting a designated off leash area. Dogs must remain in the sight of the owner and under voice control. Dog owner is responsible for their dog’s actions and must remove their dog’s waste.
For issues related to dogs being off leash in non-designated areas, please contact Boulder City Animal Control at (702) 293-9224 or 311.
Fox Family Memorial Adoption Program
In memory of Kelly Fox, the Fox Family has set up a pet adoption program at the shelter. The adoption process is a simple one. First, applicants must submit an application to the Animal Shelter (call 702-293-9283 for an application). Applications are processed by shelter staff. The memorial program will pay for the adoption fee. The new pet owner will pay the city license fee of $4. All adoptable animals will be spayed or neutered, microchip installed, and vaccinated by the City prior to be available for adoption.
The staff at the Boulder City Animal Shelter thank the community for their ongoing support of the Boulder City Animal Shelter.
