New Information broke yesterday regarding Tara’s business that has many folks in town talking. To clarify after a conversation with her this morning, Tara announced that she is interested in entertaining a serious offer to partner with someone to lease the coffee shop portion of her business. This is ONLY this portion of the Boulder City Co. Store. Tara will retain the building ownership along with the retail and the new speakeasy, we tell you all about below. When Tara Bertoli bought the Boulder City Company Store, she knew the rich history of the space and sought to preserve a lot of that history when she opened her coffee and retail shop. The aesthetics are just one of the things that make the store so charming! But she also dreamed big for her business and now one of those dreams is coming true: she’s opening a speakeasy.
What’s a speakeasy? Well, generally speaking, it’s a bar or nightclub that operated during Prohibition. She applied for, and received, her cocktail liquor license a while ago and updated all of her necessary licenses to give her customers the opportunity to add a shot of liquor to their coffee, which wasn’t possible before.
In the company store area, there was a “club room” for the Hoover Dam executives (the workers were prohibited from consuming any alcohol within city limits). Tara brought the club room to life for her customers in the back of the retail space. The room has a Prohibition theme, with a speakeasy window in the back door and a very cozy, “for members only” feel. She’s offering membership to the club, with liquor lockers for customers to rent to keep their finest beverages available for sipping at the club. The club will be open in time for this week’s Best Dam Wine Walk, so walkers are encouraged to check it out while stopping by the store for some wine.
She also hopes to tap the daytime tourist business from the historic Boulder Dam Hotel by offering soft drinks and specialty cocktails in the club via a walk through service that will invite them in through the back door to the club room.
The evenings, though, will be geared towards locals! She plans to offer a small appetizer selection to go with the cocktails and that menu will rotate throughout the year. The space is small (it holds about 20 people) so there may be a line to get in, but the mystique and prestige of the club will be worth the wait!
Tara is looking forward to welcoming her new guests soon, so make plans to sneak into the speakeasy. We won’t tell anyone! Boulder City Company Store is conveniently located in downtown Boulder City, at 525 Avenue B, at the intersection of Avenue B and Nevada Way. They open at 6:30AM daily (closed on Tuesdays).
