Keeping up with current events is essential in today’s education. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to have those current resources available for local students. When the Boulder City Elks Lodge members heard of this dilemma, they sprang into action and provided a much-needed gift to local students.
Boulder City Elks Lodge #1682 received a well-written, thoughtful letter requesting assistance from the librarian for Martha P. King Elementary School, Michelle Godfrey. Martha P. King’s library is in desperate need of a refresher to their non-fiction book collection. Per Clark County School District guidelines, all books should be no older than 10 years. As it currently stands, King Elementary School’s non-fiction inventory averages 27 years of age. Unfortunately, the amount of state and district funding needed to update these books is severely lacking.
Trustee and ENF Grants Coordinator Jim Lara and Lodge Secretary Laurie Glavin worked together to write a grant request to the Elks National Foundation (ENF) Community Investments Program. They submitted a Gratitude Grant request for $3000. The grant money was given to King’s Library to purchase non-fiction books specifically to support the 5th-grade social studies curriculum. These books cover essential topics such as the US presidents, the fifty states, and the American Revolution, while offering students valuable resources to enhance their understanding of American history and government. Mrs. Godfrey was able to purchase 120 books.
Mrs. Godfrey stated in an email, “This contribution not only enriches the school library but also ensures that students have access to engaging materials that complement their studies, helping to foster a deeper appreciation of the nation’s heritage and historical events.” The Boulder City Elks Lodge #1682 Gratitude Grant will benefit local students with updated resources for years to come.
We are thankful for organizations like the Boulder City Elks Lodge for supporting our community’s children!
