Sweet – I knew that the addition of a small-scale sculpture was the one remaining piece to finish off Celebration Park (the little park area at the corner of Wyoming & Avenue G) … but I didn’t know we were getting our own Steven Liguori sculpture of a high scaler!
High scalers were the men who dangled from ropes down the walls of Black Canyon to clear away loose rocks during the construction of Hoover Dam, earning top dollar at $5 per day because the job was so dangerous.
Below are some photos I snapped for you and if our high scaler looks familiar to you – it’s because you’ve see a much larger sculpture at Hoover Dam … that one is based on a photograph of Mr. Joe Kine, a high scaler who remained in Boulder City until he passed away in 1997 at the age of 91.
And now Boulder City has its own high scaler … he’s dangling off the side of the dedication plaque/rock for the new community park (built by Boulder Dam Credit Union). If you get a chance, stop by and check him out … he’s one cool little dude!
