Boulder City to Receive New Historic Preservation Certification

Historic City Designation Boulder City, NV

We’ve got more good news from the City of Boulder City. Michael Mays, our Community Development Director applied earlier this year to have Boulder City be designated as a Certified Local Government (CGL) Program, which as created by the National Park Service and the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO). Don’t let your eyes glaze over yet from all of these agency names and acronyms…

This is new for Boulder City. We’re told that in the past, there were only four cities with CGL status in Nevada: Carson City, Las Vegas, Reno, and Storey County/Comstock Historic District Commission. According to an email we received from the City’s Communications Director, Lisa LaPlante, here’s what that means for us:

Access to funding: SHPO receives an annual apportionment from the Federal Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). SHPO is required to give a minimum of 10% of HPF funding to CLGs as sub grants that can fund surveys, inventories, National Register nominations, rehabilitation work, design guidelines, educational programs, and training.

Technical assistance: CLGs can request SHPO staff for guidance with running their required historic resource commission, building assessments, surveys and inventories, National Register nominations, and other general preservation assistance.

“Many Boulder City residents are proud of its historic past and appreciate being able to invest in historic preservation,” said Michael Mays, Boulder City Community Development Director. “Obtaining CLG designation was an action item in the City’s 2025 Strategic Plan and staff plans to use the CLG program to its fullest for the benefit of the community.”

So, as we see it, this just gives our local City staff some new tools to help is fund and achieve some of our goals in town regarding historic preservation – so we’re putting this new Certification in the ‘Win’ column for today!
