Boulder Dam Credit Union Teaches Financial Literacy to Students

Boulder Dam Credit Union (BDCU) has long been an outstanding community partner. From sponsoring local sports teams, to championing holiday food drives and Angel Tree, to providing free-of-cost shredding services during The Big Clean, Boulder Dam Credit Union is always in the right place at the right time.
The Boulder Dam Credit Union has been working with our local elementary and high school students to help children and teens learn about the hows and whys of saving money, and learning a little financial discipline along the way.
Working in tangent with the schools (AJ Mitchell Elementary School, MP King Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, and Boulder City High School), teachers and parents, the youngsters at the K-5 elementary schools get their own savings account opened in their names and a passbook to go with it. The account is called a Moola Moola account and can be opened with just $5. Then, each week several employees from the BDCU come to the schools and the participating children are given the opportunity to take whatever money they have from allowance or earnings, and deposit it into their account!
They are given rewards each week and are able to redeem those rewards for fun prizes! The more rewards, the more significant the prize.
Bailee Zillgitt, Marketing and Community Development Specialist of the Boulder Dam Credit Union coordinates the administration of the program. She tells us that they have had children of former participants who are now members of the program. We think this is a testament to the skills and discipline instilled in the program.
For the teenagers in our community, specifically juniors and seniors in high school, they are invited to two helpful 3-hour seminars. One happens in their junior year and attendance nets the student $50. When seniors attend their meeting, they are given $100. In addition to the generous gift from BDCU, juniors and seniors are invited to apply for the Eric Estes Financial Educational Scholarship. Mr Estes is the longtime former manager of the credit union. We told you about this wonderful opportunity HERE. Applications and essays are due on March 31 of each year.
If you'd like to learn more or have your child participate, please inquire at their school, call the BDCU at (702) 293-7777, or stop by credit union at 530 Avenue G and they'll be happy to get your child set up!
