If you’ve spent any time at local bars and breweries, you know that these businesses are serving up all kinds of local and regional brands of beer. One of the many ways the companies distinguish themselves is through their can art. It’s almost become a consideration of its own when selecting the next new beer to try. Much of the art is unique, produced in small batches, and is vibrant and interesting. Many could be collector’s items in their own right.
Enter Marissa Colatrella. This dynamo began designing candles during the pandemic as a hobby. She had access to empty beer cans from a relative and began disinfecting the cans, creating scent profiles, and hand-pouring the cans with 100% soy wax (if you know anything about candles, you know that paraffin wax contains various volatile organic compounds, including carcinogens – yuck! Soy wax is much better for the environment and you!). Even the wicks are eco friendly. She started gifting candles to family and friends who encouraged her to pursue this hobby as a business.
Marissa took that advice to heart and began selling her can-dles (get it?) at local craft markets and fairs, beer festivals, and bar pop up shops! Her business has taken off to the point she decided a storefront was needed and Boulder City is lucky to be home to her first shop! It’s located at 1319 Boulder City Parkway, Suite B, near EJ’s Barber Shop. The store is open Wednesday thru Sunday from 10:00AM to 4:00PM. Inside the charming store are displays of candles in their fascinating cans with fabulous scents. We had the chance to smell some of the candles on a recent visit, and believe us, these highly fragranced candles definitely pass the smell test!
In addition to candles, the store also offers wax melts in the same amazing scents. Custom orders are welcome too! So if you already have a collection of cans that you’re holding on to because you liked the cool art, why not make them into some functional as well? She can even customize scents and has down exclusive scents for other boutiques. Her current production line consists of 12 and 16 ounce candles for $12 and $16, respectively. There are a number of scents available like strawberry guava, fallen leaves, cypress gin, pineapple sage (this was one of our favorites), and more!
This may be Marissa’s first go as a business owner but the busy lady – she’s also a full time casualty adjuster in the insurance industry – has big plans for her future. She’d like to open other shops by possibly expanding to the Las Vegas Arts District. She’s also got some plans in the works for the Boulder City store that she can’t reveal yet, but it will be a fun addition to the store.
