With the war in Iraq having come to its ‘official end’ last December, I thought we should check in with Stanna Musick for an update on where her ‘Care Packages for the Troops’ project is.
You might remember that the Musicks and their neighbors, the Hunts, collect donations and requested items, then package them up and send them over to the troops serving overseas (first in Iraq and now in Afghanistan).
I emailed Stanna and asked if she’s still shipping packages (perhaps to the troops in Afghanistan) and have included her reply for you below:
Hi, yes we just sent 27 today and I will be shopping again the middle of March. We have sent over 1,500 care packages and March is our 3rd anniversary for shipping to Afghanistan.
We have also been sending requested items to the supply surgical units. They requested sweatpants and shirts for the wounded leaving the trauma units and being transported to the hospital in Germany before being sent to the states.
We had a request from the Civil Affairs Co. for hats, socks and flip flops for the kids in their area that are very poor and the weather is in the 20’s at night. The kids wear the same slight clothing year around. This unit with the support of an attachment of Marines have been handing out these items to the kids. It has given the civil affairs an opportunity to meet and try to support the locals in governing themselves.
There was a unit called Desert Rats that just left Nellis for North Carolina for more training before going to Afghanistan to join a Civil Affairs Co. I am hoping to get an address for them when they are deployed to send boxes to them, too.
Call me if you have any other questions and thank you for your concern and support for our fighting warriors. – Stanna – (702) 293-5039
Then I asked if there were businesses around town where the donation jars were and here’s that answer for ya:
Yes…several!
- Coffee cup
- Southwest Diner
- True Value
- Ralph’s Tire Pros
- Auto Specialists
- Dairy Queen
- Boulder Beauty
- Tom’s Gun Shop
- Post Net
- Fiddlesticks
- The Chamber of Commerce
- Dentists: Clothier, Rosenbaum, Candale and Family Dentist

They have been wonderful supporters for our Fighting Warriors.
There are many residents that are faithful also and without these wonderful people in Boulder City this project would not be possible. Without Larry and Lea Hunt we could not meet the requests, pack boxes and send them.
As you can see Boulder City has a great reputation on the front lines of Afghanistan and we are so proud of our community!
