World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam war periods were perilous times for several reasons. Many stepped up and answered the country’s call to serve in the Armed Forces. These veterans sacrificed so much to serve our country, not the least of which was the opportunity to join fellow graduates in the walk across the graduation stage. While it may seem insignificant in the overall picture of a nation at war, for many it is a loop that needs to be closed.
Enter Charm McElree, our local veteran advocate working with the program Operation Recognition. This program works with school districts to award veterans their diplomas. Operation Recognition was approved by Congress in 2003 to honor veterans with their never-received diplomas. To qualify, a veteran must have served honorably between September 16, 1940, and May 6, 1975. There is some paperwork involved, including obtaining the veteran’s DD-214 which details their military service and identifying the secondary school from which they would have graduated. Veterans can opt to have their diploma mailed to them, although some school districts also allow veterans to participate in commencement ceremonies as well.
Charm handles all the paperwork like a seasoned pro! To date, she has graduated over 60 veterans in 26 states. The job requires more than simply filling out the paperwork and including the required documentation. The “wait and see” period requires Charm to follow up with the school districts to make sure the request was received and is being processed.
Charm’s previous career activity included working for the Victor Valley Union High School District as coordinator of the adult school in Victorville. In her volunteer work, she’s been recognized multiple times, including by former Governor Brian Sandoval, for her tireless work to assist veterans in obtaining their diplomas. We are so lucky to have her in our community!
