Just check out this father and daughter team – Tony and Casey Scott, right outside the door of what will soon become Big T’s Cantina located in the former ‘doll house’ side of the historic Browder Building downtown at 550 Nevada Way!
There’s been a lot of work already put into this space. Most of you know that Dan and Kelly Fox acquired the Browder Building a little over a year ago. They knew that the building needed to be divided into two units. But to do that there needed to be a fire wall installed and also a separation in the sewer line was required. Tony, who has been in construction for years took that on, and while it was a HUGE job, they got it done!
They are keeping the original wood floors where possible, and also as much of the original plaster walls as they can as well. There are also two original windows they are preserving inside with artwork insets into them. They have a bar marked out (in blue, you see in the photos above) and will have seating also around that. They also plan on outdoor seating both on the side yard, where there is a second entrance that is ADA compliant, along with the back area. (That’s the big pile of dirt you see on the back of the building currently, but a retailing wall will be built and pavers added in.)
The menu he says will be fresh-mex or Tex-mex style of Mexican fare, which will of course also include beer, a full bar, and of course plenty of specialty tequila and margaritas!
Tony tells us that he’s worked construction for years, but always had a dream of owning his own restaurant, like his grandparents did before him. Daughter Casey joined in to spread her wings, after having graduated from UNR a few years ago. She has an Art(Major) and Business Degree(Minor) and started working for the Marshall Group as a Buyer, but has always had the entrepreneurial ‘bug’ from the beginning. When the Browder Building became open for lease negotiations, Tony said he jumped at the chance, immediately reaching out to Realtor Bret Runion, and snagged the spot.
Now that the COVID-19 situation is settling down, he’s busy getting permits and other needed paperwork wrapped up and is ready to go. The project recently received local RDA fund approval, so he’s anxious to get busy and finish the project! They are looking for a fall opening, and we’ll of course keep you posted.
