UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 13TH: Due to Governor Sisolak’s request to limit public interactions, the Police Department is postponing the public workshop on dog leashes. Originally scheduled for November 17th at the Smith Building, it will be postponed to a future date yet to be determined.
Next Tuesday, November 17th at 6pm at the Smith Building (700 Wyoming St.) the Boulder City Police Department and Animal Control will be holding a public meeting about what has become a common complaint in town, which is dogs off their leashes and not being supervised properly by their humans.
Things have gotten serious lately, with incidents being reported where dogs have attacked people, other dogs, and one case where a larger dog killed a smaller dog because the owner failed to restrain their animal.
Let’s get real folks – the issue isn’t the dogs – it’s us, always the owners who are at fault when these events occur!
The purpose of the meeting is to share information about our leash laws as they currently stand, and to hear input and concerns from citizens to potentially make changes to our existing City Code in relation to animals running at large.

“We love our pets, but all too often, owners forget that even the smartest dogs still have animal instincts,” said Tim Shea, Boulder City Police Chief. “It breaks my heart when we have to take an animal away from an owner because the dog acted in a way that dogs have acted for thousands of years.”
Boulder City staff has looked at other leash laws around the country for ideas. “We want to take a common sense approach to protecting people and pets by having a code that will keep pet owners happy too,” said Ann Inabnitt of Boulder City Animal Control. “By bringing everyone to the table to discuss this, I think we can find consensus.”
