DSFF Contest Winner: Meet Susan Slykerman

Dam Short Film Festival Boulder City Nevada DSFF Contest Winner

We’re excited to announce that after our random drawing yesterday, we have a WINNER – Congratulations to Susan Slykerman, who has been connected to the Dam Short Film Festival staff where she will be able to pick up her 2 VIP Passes!

If she looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve heard her somewhere! Our Dam Short Film Festival VIP Passes winner for 2023 is a talented vocalist who has performed in a variety of venues. She lends her talents to parishioners at St Andrew’s Catholic Church. She appeared in the play Showboat at Spring Mountain Ranch. She’s sung at The Bootlegger. She’s even performed with our own Phil Esser as one of the Boulder City Angels! She’s also delivered songs at various events like weddings and funerals. Or maybe you heard her sing the National Anthem. At any rate, she’s a beautiful singer with many other interests as well!

Susan is a lifetime educator who relocated to Nevada from a small town in North Dakota over 30 years ago. She taught in Clark County schools for 30 years as a librarian at various levels, retired, and took a year off (2021) and then returned to the District last year where she continues her career as librarian at JD Smith Middle School in Las Vegas. She teaches her students skills they need in this digital age, as well as the timeworn traditional love of literacy and books.

Susan enjoys reading, of course, but she also loves kayaking on the Colorado River, paddle boarding at Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas, traveling the country (we were jealous to learn she’s been to eastern United States and seen the awesome displays of fall foliage). One of her favorite recent trips include a visit to Nantucket Island.

A frequent visitor to Boulder City, Susan mentioned that she has always enjoyed our community and its offerings, especially the special events that go on throughout the year. Susan also wanted to thank the organizers of the Dam Short Film Festival for their generous contest prize. She hasn’t been to the festival before, so she was surprised to find out she won! She’s looked over the itinerary and has plans to see LOTS of the films being featured this year.

Now, back to the fabulous prize she won: these are an extra-special value, when we do these giveaways with the DSFF. These passes are normally ONLY available to Sponsors, donating $250 or above.

So if we do this again next year, be sure you don’t miss out on the chance to enter this fantastic giveaway!

A few notes on this year’s event:

  • If you want to buy tickets to specific films, you can do so HERE. Arrive early because there will be sell-outs and your ticket will be refunded if they reach the building capacity limit.
  • If you’d like to purchase regular 4-Day Passes, you can do so HERE. 15-20 minute early arrival to programs is encouraged, there will be lines for sell-out programs.

The DSFF runs for 5 days, from February 16th – 20th at the Elaine K Smith Building, They recently released the schedule for this year’s event, and you can get a look HERE. If you’d like to check out the Film Guide, head over HERE and see what they have planned.

Thank you to the Dam Short Film Festival staff and organizers for allowing us to offer this great contest to our faithful readers! Thank you to all who entered the contest – we had more than 200 entries this year!! – and of course, all the best to our winner, Susan!
