The plain blue wall is no more! As many of you noticed over the last ten days or so, the blue concrete block wall at the corner of US93 and Veterans Memorial Drive has been transformed into a dynamic display of civic pride. The beautiful eagle artwork by artist Lynne Jordan has been mounted on the wall and the final lettering done. Well, the lettering isn’t exactly final, as the number of state championships will continue to be updated over the years as the Boulder City High School Eagles bring home more hardware. This year, the school successfully won state in three sports: girls tennis (fall), boys swimming (spring) and boys volleyball (spring).
Mayor Pro Tem Sherri Jorgensen was at the ceremony to acknowledge the guests in attendance and also to recognize the various people responsible for this wonderful artwork. First of all, artist Lynne Jordan and her son, Ryan, were thanked for their incredible work on the eagle sculpture that graces the wall. We told you about the initial stages of the project last year. You can find that story HERE. Sherri acknowledged former mayor Kiernan McManus who helped envision the project that was approved in the 2022 Capital Improvement Plan.
Boulder City High School principal, Amy Wagner, was in attendance and spoke about the pride the students and student athletes have in representing their school. She spoke about Tuesday’s graduation ceremony and speaking with a student who is a fourth generation BCHS Eagle alum!
Michael Mays, Community Development Department Director and current Acting City Manager and Julie Calloway, Parks and Recreation Department Director were among the fifty or so assembled for the dedication. Gary Poindexter, Public Works Department Director, and several members of Public Works staff were also noted for their contributions, including mounting the sculpture and arranging for additional equipment to the jobsite to complete the wall. Danny McKay, of Reliable Crane, was thanked for providing the crane necessary to lift the over 900-pound sculpture into place. Lloyd Hawkins, of Eagle Iron Company, was also congratulated for his welding and iron work on the sign.
Leonie Mowitt was present from Senator Jacky Rosen’s office to present certificates to the city, the high school, and of course, to the artist. She spoke about the pride Nevadans take in their towns and cities and congratulated Boulder City for supporting the youth of our community with this recognition.
We think the sign looks perfect now and can’t wait to see the additional state championships added in future years!
