Events at the Community Gardens this Autumn

Do you have a green thumb? Or are you looking for advice for your fall and winter garden? Local gardeners have some events scheduled in the next few weeks that will help you get started and your plants growing! We caught up with Lead Gardener with the Community Gardens Cheryl Waites (she's also the Hollyhock Lady here in town!) and she let us know about important events coming up at the Community Gardens, located at 300 Railroad Avenue, adjacent to the Old Water Filtration Plant.

Mornings at the Gardens, Saturday, September 12 from 8:30AM to 10:30AM: Join the Community Gardeners for coffee, snacks and a garden walk and talk! Topics are upcoming events, the Little Free Library and prepping for fall and winter gardening! Discussions will also include soil amendments, what to plant for fall and winter in Boulder City, other garden planning tips and techniques. They will also have a seed swap so bring your seeds to exchange with other gardeners.

Mornings at the Gardens, Saturday, October 10 from 8:30AM to 10:30AM: October usually brings cooler temperatures and the local gardeners will be celebrating Butterfly Month as the insects migrate to warmer temperatures to the south. That day will be Butterfly Day and children are especially encouraged to come to the gardens to learn more about butterflies and why they are important to Earth.

Autumn Garden Festival and Plant Sale, Saturday, October 17 from 8:30AM to 12:00PM: Come join the Community Gardeners at the Festival, where there will be garden activities for all, including a scavenger hunt, worm farm, Kids Garden, seed swap, DIY propagation station, ABC’s of composting, and garden art. Plants that will be available include cool weather herbs and vegetables, flowers, Mojave natives, pollinator plants, cactus, and succulents.

Future events in November: Cheryl Waites will be taking preorders for Thanksgiving herb garden kits in early November. These kits come in handy for the holidays and will make a great addition to your garden and kitchen. They make great gifts or projects for children too!

Donations please: The Community Gardens are also looking for donated garden tools, plant arbors, composters, wagons, wheelbarrows, and other garden-related items. Gardening books and labeled seeds are also welcome at the Little Library onsite.

Need volunteer hours? Come help at the Community Gardens! For students looking for volunteer hours, we have different projects you can help with. Contact Miss Cheryl at (702) 349-0506 or email her HERE for details!
