We recently met with Charlene Ferguson, a fairly new member of the community, to learn more about her super cool Halloween blacklight maze called Fergie’s Fun Fright. Located at her home at 1400 Monterey Drive, it’s her first annual event here in Boulder City. But she has previously provided Halloween fun for nine years in Sunnyvale, CA. She’s a sweet person with an intense love of Halloween (check out her shirt above!). She loves Boulder City and hopes to make this a tradition for other Halloween lovers, especially children.
Charlene’s father, James, helped her begin the tradition back in 1997, when they built their first haunted house together. Both were big fans of Halloween, and looked forward to sharing their joy with neighbors and other members of the community. James passed away in 2002, but Charlene revived the tradition in 2010 as a way to help carry her father’s legacy forward, and also to celebrate her oldest son’s birthday, which is October 29. She continued creating different displays annually, until moving away in 2019.
From the event website HERE, Charlene describes the maze like this:
“Filled with animatronics, strobe lights, black lights, and a variety of ever-changing themes, this maze is a cool and fun exploration of the many sides of Halloween. Open to all ages, there is a “scary” side and a more “Halloween-sensitive” side, allowing the fun to be available to everyone.”
Just to give you an idea of the work that goes into a display like this, Charlene began building the maze in June and just finished this week! She says she does it for the enjoyment of the visitors to the maze, especially the children.
In addition to creating an exciting tradition for local residents, she also believes in giving back to the community. So, instead of charging an admission fee, she’s holding a non-perishable food drive to benefit Emergency Aid of Boulder City. Some of the items she would like visitors to bring include canned (preferable pop-top cans) or other non-perishable food items, diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6, as well as travel-sized toiletries.
You can make plans to visit Fergie’s Fun Fright beginning this Friday, October 20 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. The remaining dates for the maze are October 21, 27, 28, 29 and 31. Come check it out and bring your friends. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Charlene will be handing out candy each night the maze is open!
Also, if you’re so inclined, you can donate to future displays by going HERE. Check out the really cool flyer below for all the details and we’ll see you there.
