Historic Preservation Day Scheduled for May 14

May is designated as Historic Preservation Month and the City is inviting the community to participate in Historic Preservation Day on Saturday, May 14. The event takes place from 8:00AM to 3:00PM.

  • Participants will be able to take part in such activities as:
  • Panel discussion on proposed changes to the City’s Historic Preservation Code
  • Learn about local grants available to owners of historic properties
  • Listen to local authors discuss books about Boulder City history
  • Receive a presentation from UNLV Department of History
  • Tour the historic Water Filtration Plant
  • View original railroad equipment that helped build Hoover Dam

The itinerary of events is as follows:

  • 8:00AM to 3:00PM: Start the day at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Building located at 600 Nevada Way by picking up a map of the various sites available to tour, review the schedule of events, and take some refreshments.
  • 8:00AM to 1:30PM: Vote for the winner of the Boulder City Art Guild and Boulder City History and Arts Foundation Historic Art Contest winner at this location. Voting closes at 1:30PM.
  • 9:00AM to 9:45AM: Listen to readings by co-author Fran Haraway from the Southern Nevada Women’s History Projects books: Skirts that Swept the Desert Floor and Steadfast Sisters of the Silver State at Dam Roast House and Browder Bookstore located at 554 Nevada Way.
  • 9:00AM to 12:00PM: Tour the historic Water Filtration Plant at 300 Railroad Avenue.
  • 10:00AM to 10:45AM: Visit the Boulder Dam Hotel at 1305 Arizona Street to hear a reading by Tiane Marie, the author of Boulder City Past and Present.
  • 11:00AM to 11:45AM: Head over to Boulder City Company Store at 525 Avenue B to see the presentation by the UNLV Department of History.
  • 12:00PM to 1:15PM: There will be a panel discussion on the proposed updates to the City’s Historic Resources Code and local grant programs for historic properties. The panel includes Courtney Mooney, Historic Preservation Consultant, Jill Rowland Lagan, Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Mays, Community Development Director, and Ray Turner, Historic Preservation Committee Member. This panel will be moderated by Blair Davenport, Historic Preservation Committee Member.
  • 1:30PM to 3:00PM: Visit the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the equipment and hear about ongoing preservation efforts from Chris MacMahon, Museum Director and David Held, Vice President of Railroad Operations. Tickets to ride will be available for purchase.
