Summer is coming and children and their families love to spend outdoor time at one Boulder City’s many parks. We checked in with Julie Calloway, Parks and Recreation Director for more information about the plans being undertaken at the park.
BUT FIRST:
If you have an interest in our local parks, the department wants to hear from you! There’s a park improvement survey on the Parks and Recreation website, but we’re making it easy and bring the link to you. It’s a great way to let city planners know more about the types of equipment and amenities in our parks. Check it out HERE.
NOW, ON TO THE INFO!!!
Julie gave us a lot of great information so we will provide it here:
There are 17 parks in the city’s system. Parks and Recreation created a “Parks Possibilities” page on the website (HERE) for tracking updates to the parks around town. She also told us about the Park Improvement Survey page that we highlighted above (HERE).
Del Prado Park
Regarding Del Prado Park specifically, in November we posted signs at the Del Prado Playground closest to the gazebo. The signs indicated that the playground was getting a renovation and had a QR code for visitors to provide suggestions for new playground amenities. The sign also included the phone number for the Parks and Recreation main office allowing residents to phone in their suggestions. We received over a 40 responses and suggestions for playground improvements for the Del Prado Playground.  Staff evaluated the community suggestions and sought quotes on potential equipment and safety surface improvement possibilities for the park. The demolition of the project was handled by crews from our Public Works Department at a fraction of the price quoted from local companies. The equipment, removed the end of March, was beyond its useful life and needed to be removed. The swings were still in usable condition, so staff choose to leave those until we were further along in the playground transformation process.  We also posted signage at the park and on social media with a QR code explaining the Del Prado Park Playground renovation in progress information.
New equipment and safety surface was ordered the beginning of April for Del Prado. The park will receive two new pieces of playground equipment and improved safety surface. The existing sand and swings will be removed prior to the installation of the new equipment. We anticipate the equipment to arrive in the next two months and installation beginning soon after.  Our estimate is that the park playground will be completed in the next three months, but that may be a little optimistic.
Del Prado Playground, off Navajo Street, will also have some existing playground equipment repairs to the landing stations. These won’t be as obvious to the user, however,  they will extend the useful life and safety of the equipment.
Other Parks
We encourage residents and playground users to visit all of our parks. As we continue to renovate and improve park amenities throughout Boulder City.  We are focusing on offering different play experiences at our various parks. Veterans Memorial Park has a more traditional playground with slides and swings. They also just had brand new safety surface installed just in time for the busy Easter weekend. Veterans Splash Pad opens May 1st. It was resurfaced in the fall and is a great option to keep cool in the summer. Remember, no dogs are allowed by and on the splash pad to keep it sanitary for our kiddos. Oasis Park also has recently installed equipment and safety surface to make it more accessible for users. This park playground features something for all ages. It has climbers and spinners to keep kids wanting to come back for more. Bicentennial Park Playground equipment has slides, shade, climbers and swings. The playground at Xeriscape is for younger playground users and includes swings, benches, and shade. All of these parks have received new equipment and amenities in the past 2 years so if you haven’t visited in a while, now is the time!
Pickle Ball Courts at Veterans Memorial Park: Construction began last week and it is estimated to take 90 days for construction of the 4 new, fenced in, pickle ball courts.
What’s next?Â
Park improvements are costly and often are done in stages. Staff will evaluate community requests and available funding to prioritize future park projects like the addition of shade at playgrounds, water fountains in parks, gazebo refurbishing,  or tennis court resurfacing.
