Input on Short Term Rentals Sought

At its regular meeting of 05/23/2023, public comment was held regarding short term rentals within the city. At present, short term rentals are not permitted within the city limits per city ordinances. This hasn't stopped some people from offering their homes or casitas for rental to Boulder City visitors. Officials estimate approximately twenty-five properties in Boulder City are currently operating as short term rentals.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, several residents spoke out against having short term rentals in their neighborhoods. Some of the complaints included excessive noise, marijuana smoking, large parties, and just the idea of a revolving cast of strangers within the neighborhoods. Additionally, there was some support for regulations to allow short term rentals, including Jacqueline Flores of the Greater Las Vegas Short Term Rental Association (GLVSTRA). She spoke about the financial positives to communities that come from the visitors who stay at short term rentals.

As a result of the comments, the City Council directed City staff to conduct a town hall regarding this issue. In addition to the town hall, there will also be an online survey available to residents who are unable to attend the meeting. To that end, the Town Hall was scheduled for Wednesday, July 12 at 5:30PM. The meeting place will be the Elaine K Smith Building at 700 Wyoming Boulevard. Residents are encouraged to participate in the discussion to assist the City Council as they consider the issue moving forward!
