We recently had the pleasure of meeting the administration and staff of Grace Community Staff, along with the delightful students. This gem of a school tucked away behind Grace Community Church is located at 512 California Avenue. We toured the facility and spoke with Nicole Rodriguez, the school’s principal to learn more about the school, curriculum. and students.
The non-denominational Christian school was founded in 2000 to answer a need in the community for a private religious school with smaller classroom sizes and a Christ-centered curriculum. In the twenty-three years since its founding, they have not strayed from their mission. They offer classes for students ranging from Pre K (3 and 4) thru sixth grade. The ratio of teachers to students is a remarkable 8:1!
The school utilizes the Christ-centered Abeka Curriculum for all grade levels and IOWA Testing for Nevada-required standardized testing in October and April. Most of the teachers at Grace Christian Academy came from public school systems and have chosen this career fulfilling path to help parents raise up educated students with a strong Christian foundation as well.
One of the unique things about the students and families of Grace Christian Academy is the partnership between between the family and the school. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s learning process. Teachers work with parents to address any potential difficulties before they become roadblocks to learning. Teachers have the time and desire to challenge students with special capabilities to reach for higher potential outcomes. Adults are invested in helping each student learn, whether on campus or at home, and this team approach to learning benefits students greatly.
Classes begin each day with the recitation of the pledge of allegiance and the Christian pledge before meeting in the small chapel located on the school grounds. Classes take turn leading the chapel activities. Contemporary songs are sung and daily announcements are read before students are released to their classes for their daily instruction. The school day runs from 7:50AM to 2:30PM, Monday thru Friday. Students wear uniforms four days a week with “Free Dress Friday” each week.
In speaking with one parent who has a student at the school, the parent stated their family chose Grace Christian Academy for the Christ-centered curriculum, the smaller class sizes, and the physical security of the campus. The parent is a Boulder City native who attended Boulder City public schools, having a positive experience, but sought something special for their student.
The school has newer playground equipment for older students, including a climbing wall. The play area is mostly shaded by either trees, or structural shading, making it comfortable to play outside year round. Younger students have their choice of ride on toys and a smaller, size appropriate play area with safety in mind. During our visit, the students were just wrapping up their morning recess period before heading back to classrooms for more instruction.
The school offers integrated art, science and physical education as well. These are taught by teachers on staff. They also have a really cool 3D printing club that meets on Fridays to learn basic STEAM concepts which are so important these days.
Grace Christian Academy is the ideal facility for families seeking a high quality education for their students, with engaged and enthusiastic, and experienced teachers.
