Here’s what will be going on down at Lake Mead over the month of March and early April.

Ranger Program: Campfire Cooking, March 7

Join a ranger at Boulder Beach Amphitheater at 4 p.m. March 7 to learn tips and techniques for campfire cooking from the basics of building a campfire to cast iron cooking. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Ranger Program: Coyotes: What You Should Know, March 14
Join a ranger at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater at 4:30 p.m. March 14 to learn more about the wily and opportunistic coyote. Find out why people should observe coyotes from a distance. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Ranger Program: Wildflower Walk at Fisherman’s Trail, March 14

Join a ranger at 9 a.m. March 14 at the Katherine Landing Ranger Station for a guided nature walk through the granite hills and sand dunes to a picturesque beach. During this easy two-mile hike, you will learn about the different flowering plants that call the Mojave Desert home and the animals that depend on them. BBSC St. Patrick’s Day Run, March 14

Around 1,000 runners will be participating in the St. Patrick’s Day Half Marathon March 14. The race includes a half marathon, 12K, 5K and one-mile run along a portion of the Historic Railroad Trail. For more information on this permitted event, visit http://www.bbscrun.com/stpatricksdayrun.

Join a ranger at 10 a.m. March 21 and 28 for a guided nature walk near the Lake Mead Visitor Center. During this easy 1.5-mile hike, you will learn about the different flowering plants that call the Mojave Desert home and the animals that depend on them. Volunteer Event: Native Plant Seed Collection Day, March 28

Come and help a park biologist gather seeds to grow in the park’s native plant nursery. Registration is limited to the first 18 people. For more information and to register, contact us at (702) 293-8717 or email LAKE_Volunteer_Coordinator@nps.gov.

BBSC Rage Triathlon, April 4

Around 800 athletes will compete in the Rage Triathlon April 4. Rage is one of the biggest triathlons at Lake Mead, featuring a Sprint and Olympic distance triathlon. The race will begin with a sunrise swim at Boulder Beach, followed by a hilly bike course along Lakeshore and Northshore roads and a run along the River Mountains Loop Trail. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays. During the race, the bicycle course in Lake Mead National Recreation Area is an open road. Please use caution when driving alongside cyclists. Share the road, and do not pass in no passing zones. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within the park. Volunteer Event: Earth Day Seed Collection Day, April 11

Junior Ranger Day, April 18

Lake Mead National Recreation Area invites families to join rangers for the 14th annual Junior Ranger Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center. Junior Ranger Day is held annually during National Park Week to inspire the nation’s youth to enjoy, learn about and protect natural resources.
