The Garrett Middle School Bobcat Cheer Team has received an invitation to the prestigious NRG Dance and Cheer Competition at Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. This is the first time the middle school squad has been asked to participate and they will be attending with their mentors, the Boulder City High School Cheer Teams. There will be 25 teams from all over the country at the event. These girls have been working hard since tryouts last May, including practices from 6:00AM to 8:00AM in the summer months. There are seventeen girls on the team and while they’ve been improving their flexibility and stamina, they’ve been bonding with each other during the season too. The team has five returning athletes who have previously cheered for Garrett. However, most of the girls had never cheered on a team before, so the growth they’ve shown is very remarkable!
The group, under the direction of Brandi Mozur and assistant Lisa Vesely, cheer for the football and basketball seasons. This means each girl is responsible for keeping her grades up in order to remain eligible for the team. “They know that as student-athletes, the student part comes first,” Brandi told us. “We don’t even allow them to practice if they don’t keep their grades up.”
“I’m very excited to represent my school,” said one of the team captains, Charlotte “Charlie” Tanner. This sentiment was echoed by the other team captain, Brynlee Mozur, who noted that cheerleading has taught her a lot about relating to others. “I don’t want to let my team down,” she added.
The cost of the competition expenses is $7000 and the donations need to be received prior to February 28. Checks should be made payable to Garrett Middle School, with “Bobcat Cheer” noted in the memo line. They can be dropped off at the school during regular school hours. Supporters may also email Brandi HERE to arrange pickup.
