Okay, I’d dig it if the crosswalks really were painted this way…but alas – I never get my way on anything! Oh well.
I recalled a couple of comments on the Fan page about there being a crosswalk in front of McDonald’s and some question as to why, the dangers of it, etc. So I checked with our Boulder City Social friends over at Public Works and here is the skinny:
An increasing number of pedestrians have been running across Nevada Highway in order to get to businesses across the street and it’s become quite unsafe, so the goal for the crosswalk in front of McDonald’s was to make it a little bit safer to do so. Not to say that a pedestrian is perfectly safe just because they are in a crosswalk…but it should help drivers understand that the pedestrian does have, in fact, the right of way and they need to safely let them cross.
In addition to the crosswalks, which have already been installed by NDOT, Boulder City ALSO asked for several substantial safety improvements, such as a center island for pedestrian refuge and overhead flashing lights (which would be pedestrian activated) or traffic signals to actually stop the traffic when someone need to cross the street. Although NDOT proceeded with the installation of the crosswalk as a first measure, they are studying that section of the highway to determine what else should be installed. The City has been following up with them for updates/completion. So there you have it!
