NOTE: In our previous reporting on this issue, we erred in mentioning previous public meetings. Those meetings consisted of consultations with business owners along the affected portion of Nevada Way, not the general public. We regret the error.
A meeting was held at the Elaine K Smith Center yesterday afternoon to discuss the City’s plans to reconstruct Nevada Way and reconfigure parking in the area between Wyoming Street and Arizona Street. Prior to the meeting, the City released a new proposal, “Option 2A” that omitted the center street parking on Nevada Way, for diagonal parking along the west side of the street, and converting parking to parallel parking on the east side of the street. This design would also increase the angle on the diagonal parking to a code compliant forty-five degrees, while extending parking stalls from eleven feet to twelve feet.
There will be additional motorcycle parking included in the updated design, as well as three additional ADA accessible spaces, bringing the total number of parking spaces in the downtown from 108 to 129. In addition to reconfiguring the parking on Nevada Way, there will be new diagonal parking on Wyoming Street. On the northern side of the street, it will extend from Nevada Way to Avenue C. On the southern side of the street, the diagonal parking will begin at Nevada Way to Avenue B. Parallel parking will remain from Avenue B to the terminus of the street.
The meeting was well attended by residents and business owners alike. The seating allowed for smaller groups to speak with city staff and consultants about the project. Highlights of Option 2A included:
- Preserves existing trees; one tree will be removed for an ADA accessible parking space
- Allows sidewalk extension on both sides of Nevada Way; there will be four additional feet on the east side and two additional feet on the west side
- Maintains a 24-foot clearance for emergency vehicles who use the area
- Provides long vehicle parking on the north side
- Preserves the existing parade route
- Supports outdoor dining opportunities
- Provides access to upgraded ADA-compliant crosswalks
- Adds motorcycle parking in designated areas
- Improves pedestrian safety and accessibility in alignment with Complete Streets goals
By selecting Option 2A, the work will be able to begin on July 7, 2025, as previously announced. This date was selected because it represents the slowest time of year for most of the businesses that will be affected by the reconstruction. The City further advised:
“Option 2A represents a comprehensive solution that meets the functional, aesthetic, and safety objectives of the project, while aligning with the long-term vision of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) Complete Streets program.”
The meeting concluded with a 20-minute question and answer period led by Gary Poindexter, Public Works Superintendent. Many of the questions about how the sidewalk ADA access would be maintained were answered and residents voiced concerns about future enforcement issues as well.
