You’ll see the structure for the new “Welcome to Historic Downtown Boulder City” start to appear pretty darn soon because the contractor has been pouring the footings for it in the last couple of weeks.
I know that doesn’t really tell you a lot…so I ran up to the corner of Nevada Way and Buchanan yesterday and took some photos…I’ll give you a little bit of a description on each of them, so let the scrolling begin!
First — this is the “big picture”…the artist’s rendering of what the gateway will look like when it is complete. And I just have to give a HUGE thanks to Brok Armantrout, Director of Community Development for always being ready and willing to send me info and images to share with you guys.
Okay, notice that there is a decorative structure in the middle of the street, as well as a round structure on each sidewalk (all modeled after structures at Hoover Dam, it appears)…
I parked at the new CVS and took this shot as I walked on the sidewalk toward the traffic light, just to give you an idea of where I am…
Here, you can see the round footings that they have poured on each side of the sidewalk for the replicas of Hoover Dam’s water intake towers…
And and a closer look at the footing that is on my left…
Now I’ve pointed my camera across the street to where the other water intake tower replica would be (by Starbucks), but in the foreground, you can actually see the big square base that will hold the center structure. From the artist’s rendering above, it appears that the top of the center structure will hold a single replica of Hoover Dam’s bronze “Winged Figures of the Republic” statues.
And there you have it…the work in progress update. Public Works will begin erecting the steel skeletons for the arch structure this very week, so you’ll notice some lane changes at the intersection.
Thankfully, work is scheduled in the evenings, when traffic volumes are at their lowest because they will need to close lanes from the median to the curb. During this time, all traffic will be moved to the opposite side of the street.
I’ll post a photo when it’s all done!
