We’ve got a new business in town we’re excited to tell you about – check out Richman Reading Academy, located downtown at 508 Nevada Way, Suite 4 (formerly the COOL clothing location).
We went by to meet with Owner, Angela Richman to learn more about it. Word of the day: passionate! She is very invested and sincerely motivated to help kids learn how to read, and we really enjoy her approach.
Angela has been in education for some 27 years. Nineteen of those were spent as a teacher, ages from Kindergarten through Grade 4. She spent part of her career here in Boulder City at Mitchell Elementary School from 1998 to 2010, so some of you may remember her!
But then, she moved on to the greater Las Vegas valley. What pulled her away, was the desire to focus on literacy and to become a reading project facilitator, which she did in Henderson and North Las Vegas, and finished her career as an Assistant Principal.
Now retired, she says that even when she was serving in an Administrative role, she really just wanted to follow her passion and focus on teaching children to read.
So now, through some hard work and a bit of luck, she has opened her Reading Academy here in town. It’s hard to imagine that there isn’t a need. It seems whenever the topic of education is discussed, no matter where you live, you hear about tight budgets, shrinking school and teacher resources, and the need to help keep kids stay on track in a complex modern environment.
At the Academy, Angela offers support and tutoring to students from Kindergarten thru Third Grade. She says it’s important to ‘meet the kids where they are’, and go from there.
Her sessions are 45 minutes long. For kids in school she offers tutoring after school in the afternoon, or for those who are 1 year prior to Kindergarten, she will have day sessions for them to help prep them for a better first year.
She recommends starting out with 8 classes, meeting two times a week.
If you are interested in having a little one you know take classes, you can call 702-439-2812 or email her at readingacademyinfo@gmail.com. And if you’re walking by, swing in to say hello, and see this sweet little set up that we think makes a great addition to our community!
