Patrick Mahoney has become somewhat of a fixture in the Boulder City entertainment scene and he has a show scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at the Elaine K Smith Center, located at 700 Wyoming Street. The doors open at 6:30PM with complimentary wine, beer, and snacks for the audience, before the show begins at 7:00PM! The show lasts about 90 minutes.
The concept of the Celtic Cowboys was conceived during COVID-19 when Patrick met with a friend, Ray Turner, to tell him about a new idea he had for a show: combining traditional Irish music with traditional American country music. The two genres are related in that they use similar instruments to create music. Country music in this country has some of its roots in Irish traditional and folk music.
Patrick had known from a young age that he wanted to be performer. From the age of around 4, he began entertaining family, friends, and the public with his performances. He was inspired by a pantomime show that he had seen live and that set him on his path to becoming a musician and singer. In high school, he joined his school’s band and choir. This group competed with many other secondary schools in Ireland and they won first place. It was at this time that he really began to take his abilities seriously and started taking lessons that would help him with his future career.
While growing up, Patrick’s musical influences included familiar names like Irish tenor, John McCormack, as well as American entertainers like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. He enjoyed staging productions and sharing his artistic gifts with an audience. Along the way, he was employed by the Silver Sea cruise line for a year, lived and worked in Sweden and Spain, among other European destinations and he has performed in over sixty countries!
He arrived in the United States about eight years ago and first landed in Phoenix, Arizona where he discovered he preferred that desert heat to Ireland’s more mild climate. He made his way to Las Vegas, forming a band along the way. He writes music and performs with the acoustic guitar, but his show is backed by a full band.
In addition to the fantastic band, he also incorporates a world class Scottish fiddler and traditional Irish dancers (think Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance show). There are other surprises during for the audience during the show but one of the most delightful aspects of the lively show is Patrick’s ability to connect with his audience. Audience members will find themselves singing along and having a great time being part of the show!
In addition to the approximately 100 shows he does each year, in his free time, he golfs, writes music, teaches guitar, and mentors children in musical education at Child Haven. He mentioned that he loves performing in Boulder City because the community is full of “warm, lovely people” unlike any other he’s experienced during his international career.
