Or the pigeons or the rabbits or the coyotes or any of the wild critters we find here in our neighborhoods.
The City of Boulder City has issued an official press release asking that us locals please not feed our area wild animals. However well intended we may be, it’s not helpful, and is in fact potentially harmful if we, as humans, supplement their food with our own. The City says:
“Wildlife officials warn about the damage that is done when humans create artificial feeding conditions in urban areas, and we see the impacts it has on animals who live near our boat pond, the fish pond and throughout our parks system. We hope people will think twice about feeding wildlife, even if it is food that is designed specifically for that type of animal.”
You can see a quick video they created HERE, but the bottom line is the best way for us to appreciate our local critters at Veterans Memorial Park and elsewhere is to watch, photograph, and otherwise let them be (at a safe distance, of course) so they maintain their normal feeding and migration habits.
