We popped in over to see Dixie and Ruben Valdez at their adorable shop at 555 Hotel Plaza to talk about their latest venture to foster the education of young people in our community. They’ve recently begun hosting Young Entrepreneurs Workshops where young people bring their handcrafts and goods. The kids are given a table in the shop, but they are responsible for bringing their own change drawer and calculator, decorating their table, pricing, displaying and marketing their items and bringing materials for customers to take home their new finds.
Each workshop involves five kid-sized businesses and they currently have enough kids to keep going thru the fall. The next pop up workshop will be this coming Saturday, July 23rd from 11:00AM to 3:30PM.
Ruben’s Wood Craft and Toys is an integral part of Boulder City as they provide art instruction for many local homeschool and even public school families. A customer suggested the “makers market” to Dixie and Ruben and they thought it sounded like something their customers and our community would support. A number of other business owners stopped by to see the next generation at work and support them in their endeavors.
Ruben’s Wood Craft and Toys offers the art classes mentioned, but they also do birthday parties, or other kid get togethers. During the summer, they entertain classes from Christ Lutheran Church’s Little Lambs, the City’s Safekey, as well as the Christian Center’s Daycare programs. Chances to sign up for this fun instruction go quickly as kids love to paint and create various projects.
