The Shane Patton Public Monument
For years, volunteers within the scholarship foundation have also been working toward a public memorial for Shane. “Petty Officer Second Class (SEAL) Shane Patton died June 28, 2005. He was one of 16 service members killed when a MH-47 Chinook Helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. The force was on a daring night mission to reinforce a four-man SEAL reconnaissance squad that had been ambushed in 10,000 foot mountainous terrain. A total of 11 SEALs died that day.” (Read more HERE.)
UPDATE: Last night the City Council voted unanimously to approve this plan! We will keep you posted as things progress! The volunteers have passed the plans through and been reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission as well. Both commissions have expressed some concerns but have forwarded the matter on for review by City Council. Now, the council will weigh in on the proposed monument to be constructed at Wilbur Square Park, mock ups included below. There are no financial impacts anticipated by the City at this time, according to the agenda packet.
Shane Patton was a Boulder City High School graduate and Navy SEAL who was killed during Operation Red Wing when his helicopter was shot down during a rescue mission. If you are familiar with the book or the movie “Lone Survivor” you will recall his role in that operation.
His friends along with his father Jeff, a 20 year Navy SEAL, established a foundation in his name to celebrate his life and achievements and commemorate his sacrifice. The Pub Crawl is the annual event that finances the scholarships provided to Boulder City High School Seniors. Each year several $1,000 scholarships are awarded to deserving students and citizens.
