Although it initially seemed super cool that I had dozens of baby hummingbirds all over the flowers in my backyard the other night around dusk…it soon seemed just as obvious that this was pretty unlikely. So I trapped one in a shoebox and transferred it to a jar for closer examination and to grab a photo for ya (before I set it free).
The magical powers of Google led me to find out that they were Hummingbird Moths. That it’s a moth is really clear from my photo – it’s totally bug-like. But check out the top photo (credit: Thomas Bresson) – when its feeding tube sticks out straight for feeding (instead of being rolled up under its head) – it’s easy to mistake it for a baby hummingbird!
