Cielo Salon and Academy has been open for a while now in Boulder City and we sat down with the owner, Penny McGovern, to talk about her career and her businesses here in Boulder City and Henderson. She’s been in the cosmetology business for more than thirty years, and a business owner for more than two decades, so she is using her expertise and experience to train new, junior stylists through her academy.
Penny is a delightful, charismatic woman whose career in hairstyling began in 1994 in Canada. She later trained with industry icon Vidal Sassoon to learn precision haircutting. In addition, she mastered color with Goldwell. She’s also done other training with Bumble and Bumble in New York City. Her daughter, Kennadie McGovern, is also a hairstylist who works in the Cielo Salons. As her daughter is a recent cosmetology program graduate, Penny learned there were some gaps in the teaching process for the newest generation of stylists. That’s where the Cielo Academy business was born! Instructors at the academy teach the things that only years of experience in the industry can.

At her academy, junior hairdressers are taught skills and techniques needed to become master stylists. The academy is available for those who have just graduated from an accredited program and already have their cosmetology license. The junior stylists perform some of the services at the salon, like basic haircuts and styling. It’s a great opportunity to have your hair done by a professional and it gives the junior stylists additional experience in working with clients to achieve their hair goals. As the junior stylists progress through the classes, and their apprenticeship with Penny, they are able to perform multiple hair services under her direction. Kennadie and her other junior stylist, Hannah, are at the end of their training and are taking clients in less than 9 months.
Throughout the salon, you see many interesting items on the walls, including a wall of pennies that was handmade for Penny herself! There’s also a deconstructed piece showcasing many tools of the trade that is fascinating to look at as well. But some of the artwork on the walls is by Clark Peralta and is available for purchase! These vibrant pieces of art really enliven the salon and help set the vibe for the location.
