Today we thought we’d share that today, August 21st, is a day set aside to honor our more ‘seasoned citizens’, first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. One of the things that we do love about living here, is all of the local services and activities that Boulder City has for our elderly residents.
And it’s a good thing, because there are a lot of folks here in Boulder City who are over the age of 55 – in fact, 47% of our residents are over 55, and 30% are over the age of 65. To help seniors stay involved, connected to each other and active, the Senior Center of Boulder City provides a great many services to our elder folks, as well as Meals On Wheels. Also, the Silver Rider helps provide transportation at no cost, all around town. Lastly, Lend A Hand provides free loans of in-home mobility equipment to help seniors stay independent, transportation to doctor’s appointments, and other day services. Maybe best of all to note here, is that these non-profits are powered mostly by volunteers who are often seniors themselves! (Psst – most of them also almost always could use funds or more hands to help them…just sayin’!)
According to one article we read, senior citizens are often movers and shakers behind the scenes, “When it comes to new technologies, adults above the age of 55 represent 65% of all “early adopters. This demographic is also the most politically engaged segment of the population. Almost 80% of all senior citizens vote in a presidential election, while the overall voter turnout is usually around just 50%.”
So take a few minutes today to acknowledge a special senior in your life to share a smile and a few memories. We all hope to be there one day, ourselves.
