Why the Grinch at Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum is his favorite day of the year!
What has now become a Boulder City tradition, the Grinch rides in on the Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum coach in Santa’s Electric Night parade every year, announcing his arrival from Mt. Crumpet to our awesome little city, to be followed with a day of photo ops and fun at Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum. Now, why the Grinch you ask? Tom says “The Grinch has always held a spot in my heart since I was a child watching the cartoon every year for Christmas. Later in life, finding out the narrator was Frankenstein’s monster himself, Boris Karloff, added a little extra cheer to this monster kid. But in 2000, I saw Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey at the Hollywood Galaxy Cinema, and the makeup and practical effects absolutely blew my mind! It was like stepping inside a Dr. Suess book! In 2009 I secured a job making up the Grinches at Universal Studios “13 Days of Grinchmas”. Now, I’ve worked on hundreds of movies, TV shows, and events in my career but none held a candle to making up the 9 Grinches and 100 whos used in the park. What really made it the greatest job I’ve ever had was watching these children believe that they were meeting the actual stars of the movie. We had these unique hiding holes in the park, like inside of a tree or behind the restaurants, where the actors would slip away so I could do touch-ups and make sure they always looked screen-accurate. The believability the fans had in our artwork was incredible and gave me a feeling of accomplishment I had not felt at the moment. When opening the Monster Museum in boulder city in 2017, we decided we would try to capture that magic once again and I can say hands down the experience has been everything we were striving for. This local tradition, 5 years in the making at this point, we’ve seen kids grow up with the grinch and siblings come into the picture. The kids are never disappointed and that feeling of accomplishment right around the holidays is exactly what I need to keep me going all year round. Some may think Halloween is my favorite time of year based on the fact that I’m a grown-up monster kid but the Grinch day, recreating Rick Baker’s classic makeup (with a touch of my own style) has become my favorite day of the year!“
The Grinch will be at Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum on Saturday, December 18 from 10am – 4pm. Admission to Tom Devlin’s Frightmare Before Christmas is required.
