Low Water Plan: Public meeting, Oct.11 and Oct. 12
Join rangers from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Mohave County Library, Kingman Branch, 3269 North Burbank Street, Kingman, Arizona, OR on Oct. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Henderson Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 South Racetrack Road, Henderson, Nevada. This is a public meeting to allow comment on Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s proposed low water amendment to Lake Mead General Management Plan. Park officials have been developing a plan to address operational needs for Lake Mead in the event that water elevation decreases below 1,050 feet. The purpose of this plan is to provide a long-term strategy for addressing operational needs to maintain lake access and to provide safe and diverse recreational opportunities. Comments and recommendations regarding the scope of the environmental assessment will be accepted through Nov. 5. They may be submitted by U.S. Mail to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Compliance Office, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, NV 89005 or online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/.
Ranger Program: Leave No Trace, Oct 14
Join rangers and the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center outdoor plaza for a free Leave No Trace training. These trainers travel throughout the United States providing information and training on outdoor ethics. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
Volunteer Event: Cottonwood Cove Beach Cleanup and Eco-Dive, Oct 14
Forever Resorts and the National Park Service are co-sponsoring a beach cleanup and eco-dive at Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave Oct. 14. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the cleanup goes from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will be asked to clean up around the boat harbor and shoreline. Divers interested in the eco-dive must show proof of current diving certification at registration in order to participate. Park Program: How to Fish Lake Mead, Oct 21
Join a Nevada Department of Wildlife Angler Educator from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center and learn about fishing at the lake. The staff and volunteers will share tips about fishing techniques, baits, and lures, and answer questions about licenses and other regulations. For more information, call 702-486-5127 x 3503.
BBSC Pumpkinman Triathlon, Oct 21
Around 600 triathletes will race though Lake Mead National Recreation Area Oct. 21 for the BBSC Pumpkinman Triathlon. The race has four distance options available: olympic or sprint triathlon and a 10k and 5k run. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore Road and then climb the hill into Boulder City. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays. During the race, the bicycle course in Lake Mead National Recreation Area is an open road. Please use caution when driving alongside cyclists. Share the road, and do not pass in no passing zones. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted with Lake Mead National Recreation Area. International Observe the Moon Night, Oct 28
Join a ranger at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Katherine Landing to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night. This event is part of a worldwide, public celebration of lunar science and exploration held annually since 2010. One day each year, everyone on Earth is invited to observe and learn about the moon together, and to celebrate the cultural and personal connections we all have with Earth’s nearest neighbor.
