Vote Now for New State Park Name

There's a new state park in Nevada and the Division of Parks would like the public to help name it! Recently, the State of Nevada, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources acquired a parcel of land in the Carson River Valley, just east of Dayton. The area, which measures more than 1600 acres, was previously privately owned. Through a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, a Conserve Nevada grant awarded to the Nevada State Parks Foundation, and a donation from the former landowner, the state was able to purchase the property, making it the 28th state park. Now they need the public's help to name the new park! Previously, the public was asked to submit potential names, which were narrowed down to five choices. The five choices are:

Option #1: Carson River Ranches State Park

Inspired by the ranching heritage of the Carson River corridor, this name recognizes the historic ranches that helped shape the landscape, including the Break-A-Heart Ranch and the Chaves Ranch. It also honors the river that has sustained people, wildlife, and agriculture for generations.

Option #2: Cottonwood Trails State Park

Inspired by the park’s iconic cottonwood trees and the many pathways that have crossed this landscape through time, this name reflects the journeys of Indigenous peoples, westward emigrants, the Pony Express, the Carson & Colorado Railroad, ranchers, and others who have traveled through the Carson River corridor. It also looks ahead to the recreational trails and opportunities for exploration that may be developed as the park opens to visitors.

Option #3: Crossroads Canyon State Park

This name recognizes this canyon as a historic crossroads where people, cultures, and travel routes have intersected for generations. It reflects the movement of Indigenous peoples, westward emigrants, the Pony Express, the Carson & Colorado Railroad, ranchers, and others through this important river corridor. This name also subtly acknowledges the property’s unique history as a divorce ranch in the 1940s-1950s.

Option #4: Heritage Canyon State Park

This name celebrates the rich natural and cultural heritage of this canyon. It honors the many landscapes, stories, traditions, and generations of people that have shaped the area and contributed to its significance today.

Option #5: River's Edge State Park

Inspired by the park’s approximately 4.5 miles of Carson River frontage, this name reflects the river’s central role in the landscape and the future opportunities it will provide for recreation, wildlife viewing, and exploration along the water’s edge.
