Mrs Samons’s class at Andrew J Mitchell Elementary School recently won a contest for Nevada Reading Week, which runs the first full week in March. The class put together a video, in which they told about how much they enjoyed reading. The Silver Knights Hockey Club of Henderson saw the cute video and chose the class for special assembly.
Herald, the Town Crier from the Henderson Silver Knights, was on hand to read a special book to the students there. The book was called Brady Brady and the Great Rink and it was written by Mary Shaw and Chuck Temple. Chuck Temple also illustrated the book. The story is about a young boy who builds a hockey rink in his back yard. The book is part of a series of books about Brady Brady and the children quietly listened as Herald read the story.
We spoke to one of the students, Linley Lawrence about the honor. Linley is 7½ years old and has been reading since she was 5. Her favorite book series is Ivy + Bean, by author Annie Barrows, and illustrated by Sophie Blackall. She is the middle child in her family and has two sisters. She enjoyed the question and answer period after the reading. The students had lots of great questions for Herald. But her favorite part was when Herald demonstrated his cool heralding trumpet.
Nevada Reading Week is an initiative by the state that encourages literacy. Started more than 40 year ago, the mission is to inspire and instill the joy and importance of reading across Nevada. This year’s theme is Color Our World With Books.
Congratulations to Mrs Samons and her class on their accomplishments!
