One of my favorite bronze statue scenes around town is the group of children playing in front of City Hall, so I stopped by to take a photo of it and the corresponding plaque…only to discover a mystery!
The plaque says that the date “1932” was designed into the brickwork on the east wall to commemorate the building of the two-story building that once served as the elementary school. But I could find no such date in the brickwork!
I checked with our peeps in Community Development and it seems that the date was never built into the brick pattern, but the date had been painted on the diamond shaped inset at one time.
Regrettably, it was washed off a couple of years ago during some post-construction cleanup – so Public Works is looking for photographs of the east side of the building from the 1930’s or 1940’s so that they can reproduce it in the original style.
So it’s a call out to the Fans! Does anyone have photos of the east side of City Hall so we can be a part of this restoration endeavor?
