Could just be me, but I’ve been hearing more and more about paddleboarding lately – so either I’ve just been really out of it (never out of the question) or it’s something that’s catching on a lot more lately. Good stuff because I recently spotted a new little shop on Nevada Highway (right next to Sudz Laundry) that looked a lot like it was dedicated to paddleboarding and yes, indeed – it turned out to be 9th Island SUP.
First — the origin of their name is cool: “9th Island” is what Hawaiians affectionately call Las Vegas because it’s such a popular vacation and relocation destination for anyone living on one of Hawaii’s eight islands. And SUP is short for “Stand Up Paddleboard” … so there you go!
Now the skinny … direct from the folks at 9th Island:
“We are the first and only shop dedicated exclusively to stand up paddleboarding in the Las Vegas/Boulder City area. We focus on sales, rentals, touring, lessons, SUP Yoga, Sup Fitness, downwind and race training. We carry SIC, Boga, Infinity, and Riviera and we paddle Lake Mead, Willow Beach, and Lake Mojave.

Kirk Mitchell is a Special Operations veteran and after living in Hawaii for almost 2 decades, recently moved here to open and run the shop. He is an endurance athlete, a SUP enthusiast and has a passion for helping people find the right board for them.
Sarah Joy has been a certified yoga & Pilates instructor for over 15 years who has previously owned her own Pilates & yoga studio and now works with clients on the water.
Emily Mitchell is a certified yoga instructor and personal trainer who trains clients at all levels of yoga and fitness, from very beginner to advanced. She’s taken her passion to help clients reach their goals to the lake and the pools!”
9th Island SUP rents paddleboards at hourly or daily rates and they’re currently running a 50% off rental rates through August 31st (2016) – which makes it $50 for the entire day. They also have inflatable paddleboards that you can rent and easily transport if you aren’t set up to transport paddleboards easily.
They also have FREE group training three times a week at 6:30am – just ask them how to join that posse.
If you feel that starting off with a private lesson is a better way for you to go – those are $65 for a 90 minute lesson on Lake Mead.
