This week we’ve got a snap from the shores of Lake Mead and a Great White Egret, courtesy of our friends at Lake Mead Cruises.
Fun Facts about this beautiful bird:
The specie was nearly hunted to extinction in the US in the 1800’s because we prized it for their feathers for decoration. Thank goodness, early conservation efforts in the following century were successful, and the Egret, or Heron, image became a symbol for the National Audubon Society.
In winter, they migrate out of the northern US and hang out mostly in the southern parts of North America. But because of Lake Mead’s plentiful still waters and fish, we get to see these visitors year-round.
However, in general they don’t nest here, but tend to do that farther east or south of us, closer to warm coastal areas.
