On a rainy day like today, it’s hard to imagine being down on the Lake, but this came across our desk and felt it was worth the share!
Since 2002, both glass and Styrofoam anything have been banned from the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, both having been identified as especially nefarious kinds of litter that is harmful to both people and wildlife. Much to our dismay though, we read this quote:
“Since the ban, we have not seen a substantial reduction in the use of glass and Styrofoam by park visitors. This continues to present a significant safety and environmental hazard,” said Adam Kelsey, chief ranger.
So…be warned that starting this Spring Break week the Park Rangers are getting serious – really serious about enforcing this.
In fact, they announced that on both March 24-25 and also May 18-20 they will be doing random zero tolerance patrols, and violators will be fined up to $5,000!
We know that most of us locals are respectful souls who love our Lake and treat it well. But you might want to spread the word out there and remind visitors and friends to mind the rules. That’s a steep tab if you don’t!
