The Corner Gallery (1325 Arizona Street) is hosting a fundraiser for Family Promise of Las Vegas in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, complete with food and festivities. Here’s how the fundraiser will work:
Purchase a 5″ x 5″ canvas for $5 at The Corner Gallery…then paint/decorate/whatever you’d like and donate it back to the Gallery before May 5th, 2011.
Canvases will be on display and a silent auction will take place at the Gallery up through 8:00pm on Thursday, May 5th.
They’ll be celebrating a Cinco de Mayo observance at 6:00pm. The highest bidder will be announced at the party and the artwork will go home with their new owners!
This is a fundraiser for the homeless of Clark County, in support of Family Promise of Las Vegas (www.familypromiselv.com).
For those interested in why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, here is what Wikipedia has to say about it: “Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. When Mexico’s treasury was in ruins the president suspended all foreign debt payments for two years. Napoleon used the opportunity to send the French army to Mexico to collect. 8,000 French attacked the poorer equipped Mexican army of 4,000. The Mexicans crushed the French army, one that had not been defeated for almost 50 years.”
