The Boulder CIty Library recently received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act for the funds to purchase a new scanner for self-checkout. The grant is administered by the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records. This machine allows patrons to check out nearly all materials offered by the library. It’s very simple to use: you merely place the books on the scanning area and the machine does all the work! No need to look for a barcode to scan, or to swipe each material individually – this machine does it all, seemingly by magic!
The first thing you need to do is scan your card. To scan magazines, DVDs, STEAM kits, items from the Library of Things (cake pans, garden tools, board games, etc) you simply scan the item’s barcode, following the on screen instructions. For DVDs, you need to use the DVD unlocker next to the machine to unlock your material before leaving the library. You will be given a receipt of all your checked out items and due dates before you leave the library for your reference! See how easy it is? The library staff have also prepared a short video about how to use the new machine. You can watch it HERE.
Of course, you can still visit the lovely library staff at the circulation desk to have your items checked out personally. You will also need to visit the counter if you’re checking out CDs (the machine currently does not scan them).
